King on chessboard not giving key

The white king governs his army.

'You've killed the King! Give it to me!' exclaims the white king.

You give a black king chess piece to the white king.

'You've done well!' exclaims the white king. 'That crown is an artifact needed to break through to the lower levels. To invoke the runes of the lower level, you need this magical prism.'

'To get through the maze, spell Mishkal. After that you must do battle with the Wind Elemental. If you are fortunate enough to defeat him, spell Mystica to get access to the end.' says the white king.

'This key unlocks the door in the center, hero. Farewell.' says the white king.

He gave me nothing. And I appear to need this key to progress further down.
